Cassidy Christmas, 2008

Santa made his annual stop by Grandma and Papa's house. Cooper wasn't thrilled with Santa, but he tolerated him much better than the weekend before for the "formal" Santa picture. For that one, Cooper thought Santa might enjoy hearing how strong his vocal chords are.
Meghan, explaining to Santa that she has been a very good girl this year and rattling a few things off her list..... an Ipod, Littlest Petshop toys, Littlest Petshop DS game, and a Webkin.
Before our Christmas celebration begins, we always start it off with a Christmas story. The older grandchildren take turns reading.
While unpacking from the fun filled weekend, Cooper decided to play Santa... maybe he's not such a scary guy after all.

Bedtime Routine...

First of all, I have to admit I was rather lazy about taking pictures over Thanksgiving, although we did have a fabulous weekend at the lake with the entire Cassidy family. Once referred to as "the lakehouse," we now refer to it as "the dirthouse," as there is literally not much of a lake left due to the horrible drought which we are still experiencing. Although there was no boating, we had a blast playing games and watching football. The kids enjoyed the dirt... truly enjoyed it... from head to toe. At night, we roasted marshmallows and made s'mores. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. Sticking with tradition, the guys golfed one day, while the girls bravely hit the mall on Black Friday. The only downside to the weekend, was that almost everyone ended up with a nasty stomach bug. One by one, we all seem to be catching it. Our family was one of the first to experience it, so it has now hit us all, and we are officially back to "normal."
Now that our bodies are back to normal, so are our daily routines, one of which involves getting ready for bed. Bath then books then bed.
Bath:
Tonight, M asked if she could help give C a bath and suggested they take one together. They both had a ball!
Books:
Like most nights, M read a bedtime story to C.

Bed:

And both are now peacefully sleeping.

Turning One is....Not So Much Fun!

First of all, let me explain without sounding boastful. C is a delightful child. Rarely fussy, always happy, giggling and playing either independently or with others. We often hear the comment, "Does he ever cry? He's so happy!"
Well, we have come to the conclusion that this happy baby who never cries does not like birthdays. I completely understand... I don't particularly enjoy them myself anymore. But this was his first birthday. The birthday on which he was allowed to dive his entire face into a whole frosted cake and then joyfully eat and eat and eat the delicious sweet stuff that he had rarely been able to enjoy until now.
He wasn't quite sure about the candles.
And the cake certainly did not bring him birthday joy.

The previous photos were from a party we had for him and his cousin Nate over the past weekend. There were quite a few people present, as it was a combined party. Lots of family and friends. The adults and other children had a ball. Cooper... not so much. Well... honestly, the crowd, the noise, all the kids running around..... he was just overwhelmed.... out of sorts... not himself. That had to be it.

So... we tried it again. This time on his actual birthday, November 5th. M helped me bake and decorate a new cake for the special occasion. This time, C was going to have a blast, we just knew it!

Uh oh... there's that funny looking thing on fire again...
And the cake... just not his thing.

C did enjoy opening up all of his gifts and playing with all the new toys, but the candle and cake and singing "Happy Birthday," he'd rather do without.
We'll try it again next year!

Halloween '08

Our jack-o-lanterns... M and I prefer silly, while K (and C) go for scary.
Our costumes for last weekend's Halloween party. Argh!

Keeping with tradition, Alex, Aubrey and Dylan came to our neighborhood to trick-or-treat with M and C.

Aren't these the cutest little pirates you've ever seen? C kept the hat on for about as long as it took me to take this picture.

Cheap Fun (sort of)

How much fun can you possibly have with a cardboard box???

As M and C found multiple uses for the cardboard box, K was hard at work... four grueling hours worth... putting together the basketball goal that was originally inside that box. I'm not sure K had quite as much fun as M and C did on this beautiful Sunday afternoon. However, being named "PIG Champion of the Neighborhood" shortly after the project was completed quickly lifted his spirits.

Flat Stanley Visits Georgia

Flat Stanley made his way to Georgia to spend a couple of weeks with us. (Thanks, Babes!) In case you have not met Flat Stanley, he is a character from a very popular children's book who becomes flattened by his bulletin board and then exeriences life in his flattened state and is mailed to friends in an envelope! After reading the book, children in elementary classrooms ship their own Flat Stanleys to various friends' and family members' homes so that Flat Stanley can experience life in other locations.

So.... here are some of Flat Stanley's adventures during his visit with us...

The "friendly" ghost who now resides on our front porch mistook Flat Stanley for the Boogie Man (that's why he's there, after all) and captured him! Luckily, M was there to save him. Whew!
Help! Flat Stanley has fallen into a pumpkin patch, and he can't get up! (We were asked to dress Flat Stanley in attire appropriate for our area. We felt UGA attire was most appropriate.)
Ugh! The pumpkin Flat Stanley chose was enormous!
I think Flat Stanley loved the bunnies as much as M did!
Our park system was just recently named #1 in the nation! Flat Stanley was impressed!
Flat Stanley was shipped back to Illinois today. We'll miss you, Stanley!

Fall Visit from Mo and Big T

I've been rather lazy about posting blog entries these days. Mo and Big T came to visit us over the last weekend of September. We spent a lot of time at the ball park and just simply hanging out. Unfortunately, these are the only two pictures I have from the weekend. Somehow, when my technologically challenged husband decided to take over the picture taking, all of the pictures were erased from my camera.

If you're wondering who/what the big furry black thing is, it is Mo and Big T's labradoodle, Homer. (He was named after the St. Louis Cardinal's catcher Jadier (pronounced Yahdeeair) Molina) So how'd they get Homer out of Jadier Molina? The St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series a few years ago because of "Jadi's" home run (homer). Mo and Big T happened to have purchased the dog in Tennessee on their way down to visit us that weekend, so he had no name yet when they arrived. After watching the game that weekend, being the avid Cards fans that they are, Mo and Big T decided to formally name him Jadi's Homer.

We had a picnic at the park one afternoon. Please take notice that Kevin is in the picture. That's because I am taking the picture. If he had taken the picture it would have been erased with all the other great shots from the park.

Photo Shoot

We have been having the most incredible weather, so C and I have been spending a lot of time outside while M is at school. Today, I decided to take the camera outside with us. Here are just four of the approximately 55 pictures I took. Love the digital camera and being able to simply delete the ones I don't want!

Smiling (sort of) for Mommy...
Playing ball with Sampson...
Sampson wants that ball so badly he can taste it...
Another smile for Mommy...

M's Favorite Toy

M adores her Webkinz stuffed animals. She plays nonstop with her Littlest Petshop characters. She loves her Nintendo DS. But her very very favorite toy... the one she would rather play with than anything else... the toy she could not live without... is C!

Here, along with her Webkinz, she is playing "Eight Below," one of her favorite movies. M and the Webkinz are the huskies, while C is the musher!

Mush! Mush! Mush!

I'm not sure the huskies will survive this expedition, and I wonder how the laundry basket will do through a blizzard...

I promise, I really do dress C. Although the last few posts don't make it appear this way, I honestly do dress him in cute little boy outfits. It's just that I don't feed him in those outfits because he is the world's messiest eater, and most of the pictures are taken right after feeding time.

The Sweet Spirit of the Olympics

As stated in one of my very first posts, we are a family full of sports nuts, so the summer Olympics brings our house much happiness.

We have become true Phelps Phans and even went into a slight state of depression when the swimming events came to an end. How could we possibly get through an evening without witnessing the most amazing Olympic athlete win another gold medal?
We have also fallen in love with Shawn Johnson's bubbly personality, and our eyes were glued to the television as she flipped, twirled and twisted on a board that has to be narrower than my size 10 Nike. Another amazing Olympic athlete.
We love the Olympics. We love the competition between the best athletes in the world, we love the patriotism the Olympics brings about, and we love all the background stories about the world's most talented athletes.
But...yes, there is a but... we are ready for it to be over. You see, the spirit of the Olympics has brought to our household a new source of competition. No, not against each other. Sure, we all think we could beat each other in a game of water polo, handball or badmitton if given the opportunity, but this newly found competetiveness isn't about sports.
Nope, it's about ice cream and cookies. How much could one person possibly purchase at one time.... how much could one person possibly eat at one time... how much money could one person possibly save when the ice cream and/or cookies happens to go on sale during the Olympics? (3 for $10.00... are you kidding me???)
See, with the most exciting events of the Olympics being presented live on television at 11:00 PM or later, the only way we can stay up to experience the real time excitement is to eat. And instead of choosing raw carrots, apples, grapes, or any other healthy pick-me-up, we choose ice cream and cookies.
K's favorite...mint chocolate chip. Now, it is the slow churned variety, which means half the fat and calories. But when you consume an entire half gallon in one night, half becomes a whole lot!
My new favorite... Breyers' Caramel Tracks. Do you remember the candy bars we used to sell in high school to raise money for our sports teams? The chocolate ones with the creamy caramel inside? Yep... this ice cream contains itty bitty miniature caramel candy bars. Delicious. Again, it's the slow churned type, so I'm not cheating too much. Half the fat, half the calories. It's just that I feast on more than half the container as I watch that Jamaican guy coast through the finish line for another world record. And the cookies. Nestle Toll House cookies that you can scoop and bake. No messy flour or eggs. No mixer. Just scoop and bake. Warm, homemade chocololate chip cookies at your fingertips in nine easy minutes. If the Olympics are on, so are the cookies.
If ice cream and cookie consuming were Olympic sports, we would be sure to hold the world records in this house!

Boys Will Be Boys

Boys and girls are different. Now that I have one of each, in my mind, there is no doubt about it. Boys will be boys, and girls will be girls. C is now nine months old. His personality is beginning to shine, and while that personality shines, so do the differences between him and M when she was that age.

While M casually crawled around the house at nine months, cooing and squealing in delight, C bulldozes through the house, growling and grunting. Although much different methods of maneuvering, both equally adorable.

*Side note: I'm sure you will notice the difference between the attire of the first born compared to that of the second. M joyfully crawled around in a cute little dress, ribbon in hair. C.... the diaper is just fine.

M, at nine months, would joyfully sit with a toy, usually a doll, in one place, for at least twenty minutes. C will sit with a toy, usually a ball of any type, in one place, for no more than 6.5 seconds.
He will then gently... no... carefully... no... nicely... no... rambunctiously throw the ball to retrieve it and will do this again and again. Kind of like Sampson, our labrador, who at that same age would partake in this identical activity when no one else would play fetch with the poor guy.
Again, much different than M, but just as adorable.

At nine months, M loved Sampson. Don't get me wrong. C loves him too, he just prefers to display his affection for the old man in a much different way. M used to crawl up to Sampson and give him an enormous bear hug. C prefers to crawl over Sampson, several times, before pulling an enormous chunk of shedding hair from his back. Sampson, as shown above, simply goes with the flow, knowing this activity will only last for no more than 6.5 seconds, as C will then be on to his next activity, which may include, but may not be limited to, happily banging the remote control on the coffee table, digging his hands into the soil of the closest potted plant, pulling the cookbooks off the small kitchen bookshelf, finding the pantry door open and rummaging through the jars of baby food found on the bottom shelf, sitting (for no more than 6.5 seconds) in front of the dryer, giggling at the clothes being tossed around, or playfully splashing his hands in Sampson's water bowl.

So, forget the loads of toys we saved from M's younger years. A few balls, some household items and a twelve year old lab are all we need around this house to keep this nine month old entertained (in 6.5 second intervals, of course).
